Recheo Health Foundation has carried out several community health outreaches in Lagos over the years, and those experiences shaped much of the work we do today. Each outreach showed us how many children struggle with simple, preventable health issues especially with their eyesight. Many of them sit in class every day without realizing that poor sight is the reason they can’t follow lessons well. Seeing how much difference our work made in Lagos inspired us to take it to other states.
This recent outreach was our third time returning to Afikpo North, Ebonyi State, and this round focused on Amuro/Mgbom Primary School 1 & 2. Bringing this work home always feels meaningful to us. It is a reminder that care should not be limited by location, and that children in our communities deserve the same attention and access that children in bigger cities receive.
On 4 November 2025, our team, alongside the optometric unit from Sight Preserves Optometric Center Afikpo, screened more than 85 pupils at the school. The screening covered basic health checks and detailed eye examinations. A good number of the pupils had never been examined before, so the outreach provided their first opportunity to understand their eye health.
The results showed that several children needed follow-up treatment. Some of them required medicated eyeglasses, while others needed eye drops to support clearer sight. Knowing how important it is to complete the process, we returned to the school on 7 November 2025 to distribute the eyeglasses and treatment materials. The pupils responded with excitement and relief. For many of them, being able to finally see the board clearly or read with ease was a new experience. Teachers and parents also expressed how much this support would improve classroom performance and participation.
Taking this outreach to Ebonyi state reminds us why Recheo Health Foundation exists. Our goal has always been to make healthcare accessible, practical and close enough for people especially children to benefit from it without barriers. Every child deserves the chance to see clearly, learn confidently and grow without avoidable limitations. This outreach reaffirmed that commitment, and we remain dedicated to expanding this work to reach even more schools and communities as the case may be.
